  48.     A Marine contingent takes fire after its helicopter lands near
  49. the U.S. embassy. One Marine is killed.

  53.     Malcolm Kerr, president of the American University of Beirut,
  54. is assassinated as he steps off the elevator near his office in
  55. the university administration building. Islamic Jihad claims
  56. responsibility.

  60.     Two Marines are fatally wounded during a fire fight with
  61. Shi`ite militiamen.

  63.     SEPTEMBER 20, 1984

  65.     The U.S. embassy annex in East Beirut is severely damaged by
  66. a car bomb; two Americans are killed.

  68.     JUNE 3, 1985

  70.     CIA Beirut station chief William Buckley, kidnaped March 16,
  71. 1984, dies in captivity. The body is never released. On Oct. 4,
  72. 1985, Islamic Jihad announce that it killed him.

  76.     American Navy diver Robert Stethem is beaten and shot aboard
  77. hijacked TWA Flight 847, and his body is dumped on the tarmac at
  78. Beirut airport. Thirty-nine other American passengers and crew are
  79. held hostage for 17 days.

  81.     APRIL 17, 1986
  82.  
  83.     American University librarian Peter Kilburn, who disappeared
  84. Dec. 3, 1984, is found shot to death along with two British
  85. hostages. A nearby note says they were killed in retaliation for
  86. the U.S. air attack on Libya three days earlier.
